Train passengers face delays on new Southern timetable aimed at 'better service'

"The new timetable also means that the vast reduction in services, approved by the government, will leave remaining trains dangerously overcrowded and it will be our members at the sharp end ‎left to manage the safety of the passengers".

Govia Thameslink Railway, the train operator behind the brand, said the "interim" move, in which it has cut 341 trains a day for a month, was aimed at making services more "resilient".

"This new timetable allows us to target our resources where they are needed most and at the same time give passengers a more predictable service which they can plan their lives around".

"Southern mismanagement is needlessly wrecking passengers' evenings, interfering with childcare, and stressing out the workforce".

"In the meantime what we want to do is enter into some meaningful discussions with the RMT about how we bring this dispute to an end, how we get our people back to work, and how we can collectively start giving a much, much better service for customers on the Southern network", Ms Crowther said.

A demonstration will be held at Victoria station in London tomorrow morning as commuters put pressure on GTR over its services which are the worst performing in the country.

The firm previously apologised to passengers for weeks of disruption but went ahead with the timetable changes despite warnings that they could have a "devastating" impact.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said the Government assurances were "not worth the paper they are written on", adding: "It's all words and no detail".

Some Southern passengers have complained about being unable to get home from work to see their children because services have been so unreliable, and some say they have lost their jobs. The driver, who did not wish to be named, was cheered by commuters for taking a stand and they broke into a rendition of For He's A Jolly Good Fellow.

Cllr Govindia said: "We need the Transport Secretary to step in and resolve these problems now".

"By April of this year, things were okay.

I have learned to accept that I can't get a seat any more but I can't accept not getting a train".

More than 12,000 people have also signed a petition for the franchise to be removed from Southern.

And Stephen Joseph, of the Campaign for Better Transport, said another fares strike was "highly possible".

Weekend services will run as normal.

'It shouldn't be this hard to make sure people get to where they have to go.

ANGRY rail users from the south of England are set to demonstrate at London Victoria later today, as Southern axes one train in six in a bid to improve reliability.

Alex Neill, Which? director of policy and campaigns, said: "Given the extreme disruption passengers are facing for the foreseeable future, Southern must offer improved compensation, particularly for season ticket holders and commuters forced to use crowded short form trains at peak times".
