AirAsia says plans to order 100 Airbus A321neo jets

FARNBOROUGH, England Airbus (AIR.PA) bagged deals worth $20 billion to seize the initiative at a rain-soaked Farnborough Airshow on Tuesday, but industry executives said the mostly lacklustre event confirmed a recent boom in aircraft orders was finally fizzling out.

Malaysia-based low-priced carrier (LCC) AirAsia signed a firm order with Airbus for 100 A321neos, the largest single new order for commercial jets announced so far at the Farnborough Airshow. Some of the new jets would be for the Malaysian-based airline's leasing business, he added. "We would like to congratulate Airbus for producing the state-of-the-art A321neo aircraft that meets our requirements for efficient operations", Fernandes said.

AirAsia will reportedly use some A321neo units to provide improved services to India, the world's fastest-growing major aviation market.

"Looking at more ancillary, more capacity and dual listing", he tweeted.

But Fernandes told reporters that if AirAsia had an opportunity to be in China, "we will 100 percent be there".

Turning to emerging markets, the U.S. planemaker added upbeat news from Asian powerhouse China.

Massachusetts Gov. Baker signs transgender rights bill
The Senate wanted it to become effective immediately upon the governor's signature, while the House bill had an effective date of January 1.

The marks the first order placed by AirAsia for the largest model in the A320 Family.

In a centrepiece to this year's airshow, the USA military's supersonic F-35 warplane - the most expensive in history - made its Farnborough debut in a deafening roar, having already delighted the crowds at the Royal International Air Tattoo last weekend.

Separately, Airbus was still negotiating to sell 72 A320neo aircraft to India's GoAir, duplicating an earlier order by the airline, and delayed by several hours a press conference that had been expected to announce the deal, show participants said.

This year's Farnborough airshow has been partly overshadowed by Britain's shock referendum decision last month to leave the European Union.

This reaffirms the carrier's position as the largest airline customer for the Airbus single aisle category. The group headed by CEO Tony Fernandes has 304 single-aisle planes and 76 twin-aisle jets from Airbus, as well as a significant number from rivals Boeing.
