Calgary officer stabbed in mall after chase, suspect shot

The officer is in stable condition and the man in serious, life-threatening condition, having to undergo emergency surgery.

"It's a very good thing that no one died in that incident", she said Sunday.

"I can't speak enough about the courageous efforts of our officers and the work that they did".

The province's police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), is looking into the two police involved shootings in Calgary on Saturday.

The actions of the police officer are now under investigation by members of ASIRT, which is called in any time a person is seriously injured or killed during an incident involving police.

In that second incident, Hughson said, an officer opened fire as a truck was driving toward him in the Blackfoot Truck Stop parking lot.

About an hour earlier, officer pulled a silver pickup over near the Blackfoot Truckstop Diner and as they approached it, noticed the driver acting suspiciously with a rifle next to him.

A 15-year-old girl also in the vehicle was later released to her guardian. Hughson said it was recently purchased. "Our job is to determine, through the evidence, whether the officers' conduct was reasonable and justified, or whether there was an unreasonable level of force used".

A handful of officers were milling about the entrance to Sears into Saturday evening.

He said normally the most trouble that happens at the mall is shoplifting and a violent incident was totally unexpected.

He said he hopes Saturday demonstrates that to the public, if nothing else. The general public can't understand and we don't expect them to understand but this is the reality of being a police officer.

Burns called the mall incident unfortunate and avoidable.

Saturday wasn't the kind of day any officer wanted to see, Burns said.

Representatives of the Calgary Police Service could not be reached immediately for comment.

"To have multiple situations happen in short order was unusual, but you never know what you're dealing with".
