Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith in final push for Labour leadership votes

by Garry Watts September 21, 2016, 1:22

Momentum was set up as a successor to Mr Corbyn's successful 2015 Labour leadership campaign.

He said he wanted to abolish the category of "registered supporter", which allows people to pay a fee and vote in Labour's leadership contests without actually becoming members.

Mr Watson insisted he was "open-minded" about whether shadow cabinet elections should involve MPs only or a mix of members, the leader and MPs.

Asked if he would urge Labour MPs who have been critical of Mr Corbyn to serve in the shadow cabinet if the incumbent retains his post, Mr Watson said: "Yes, I think all members should consider how they can best serve their party - that's why they become MPs".

The Shadow Defence Secretary added: "There are people in the parliamentary Labour party who will come back and support Corbyn but there are a small group who I'm sure will refuse to do that".

Kezia Dugdale has admitted she is not proud of the way Labour has behaved during the United Kingdom leadership contest but believes she can unite her Scottish party whatever the outcome.

Dubbed "Tiny Trots" by Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, the group will launch with a kids" programme at Momentum's "The World Transformed' fringe festival, running alongside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool next week.

The Labour leader wants to enable the party's 600,000-strong membership base to be able to elect some of top team in Westminster and give activists a direct say in policy making through "digital consultations".

His comments, in a BBC programme looking at the state of the Labour Party, came as Corbyn's attempts at reconciliation with disaffected Labour MPs were overshadowed by suggestions party members could be involved in picking the shadow cabinet.

Registered supporters were given a say in the choice of leader as a result of changes brought in by Ed Miliband, and approved by the party in 2013, created to open up the process to a wider audience. "I think you'll begin to see that play out, particularly in local elections next year and after that". "It's right we'll be discussing elections to the shadow cabinet at the national executive committee this week, as well as who might take part in those elections, and how to ensure proper representation of the regions, nations, general and ethnicity".

Later, Mr Corbyn told the online parenting network Mumsnet that his favourite book was James Joyce's Ulysses, and that he had read it at least three times.

"Really I felt it very sharply that we have previously treated supporting an alternative party as a more serious offence than articulating anti-Semitic or other racist or homophobic, for example, views.

I think the love may be further away", he added.

Launching a digital democracy manifesto during his campaign, Corbyn said that he was anxious about the impact on young people.

In the video he said: "I'm going to be there, because I want to see a world transformed".

He said the question of deselection was a "democratic choice for our members" and that MPs who had plotted against Corbyn had "brought it on themselves, in a way".

It also says that it is never permissible to use anonymous accounts or hide an identity as a means of abusing someone.
