Artifacts found on pipeline route not reported for 10 days

"This claim / rumor is absolutely false", Morton County Sheriff's Department said on its official facebook page on Monday. He added that the Army Corps of Engineers "is examining whether there are ways to reroute this pipeline".

In September, the president made a passing reference to the protests, acknowledging Native-Americans have rallied around the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

Violence broke out last week when a group of protesters tried to create a second camp on land owned along the pipeline's path. Hundreds of law enforcement officers in riot gear used pepper spray, rubber bullets and high-pitched noise cannons to disperse the activists who refused to leave, arresting 141 people in the process.

The pipeline's operator, Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, insists the project is safe. Many say they were held in cages and faced "cruel and inhumane treatment" behind bars. Consultants for the pipeline company determined there was "a low likelihood" for buried artifacts but recommended avoiding the site. Protests that have included clashes with police have gone on for several months in North Dakota.

It was Obama's first time commenting in detail on the Dakota Access Pipeline, which was created to transport crude across a swath of Midwestern US states, including near two major American Indian reservations.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has been fighting the pipeline for two years, arguing it could traverse sacred ground and burial sites and pose health risks.

Almost 8 months after a cadre of Indigenous tribes and their supporters began protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, U.S. President Barack Obama has finally issued comment on its construction, suggesting that it be rerouted around sacred Native American lands.

The efforts to oppose the Dakota Access Pipeline has reverberated around social media in the form of the hashtag, #NoDAPL.

North Dakota Chief Archaeologist Paul Picha says he was notified of the discovery in a timely manner but didn't report it to the commission because he thought the pipeline company would.

Julie Fedorchak, who serves as the chairman of the North Dakota Public Service Commission, told National Public Radio in an interview Wednesday that Standing Rock Sioux did not participate in the almost 30 hours of meetings held to determine the pipeline's southern route.

"There is an obligation for protesters to be peaceful and there is an obligation for authorities to show restraint", he said on "NowThis".

So far, North Dakota and the local governments it backs have shouldered most of the law enforcement expenses - even paying for officers from other states that have assisted North Dakota during the protests.

While Obama has remained silent up until now, activists have also excoriated U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who has to date only issued a short statement saying she believes "all voices should be heard and all views considered in federal infrastructure projects".
