Labour loss in Copeland by-election deals blow to Jeremy Corbyn

Trudy Harrison has won a historic victory in the Copeland by-election for the Conservatives winning by a majority of 2,147 votes over Labour.

The Copeland victory for the Tories is the first by-election seat gained by a party in government for 35 years. The Tory candidate, Trudy Harrison, won with 13,748 votes to Ms Troughton's 11,601, increasing the Conservative vote share in the constituency by 8 points to 44 per cent.

"It is now entirely up to Jeremy and those close to him to decide what is best in the interests not simply of the party but of the people we are in politics to represent, " he said.

"What we've seen from this victory is this truly is a government that's working for everyone and every part of the country - and that's the message that we bring here to Copeland and we'll take across the country."

Labour campaigns chairman Ian Lavery insisted the by-election was not a ballot on his leader's performance, claiming on Friday afternoon that "Jeremy Corbyn is one of the most popular politicians in the country at this moment". The constituency is heavily dependent on the Sellafield reprocessing plant, and hopes to welcome the new Moorside nuclear power station.

Labour did, however, hold its seat in Stoke-on-Trent in the English Midlands, dealing a serious blow to the right-wing United Kingdom Independence Party, whose leader Paul Nuttall had mounted a high-profile bid for the seat only months after becoming head of the party in November.

As well as the Stoke by-election - which was won by Gareth Snell - Copeland was seen as a major test for Jeremy Corbyn's Labour. "But we are in trouble as a party", he told the BBC.

Woodcock stopped short of calling for Corbyn's resignation, but said he should remain leader "unless he decides that he thinks it is right to go". Prepare to be told that this defeat is not Jeremy Corbyn's fault, but behind the spin, Corbyn's misjudgements are the cause of Labour's woes.

US Stocks Mostly Lower After FOMC Minutes
Some Fed officials were anxious that if interest rates stay too low, the expanding economy could cause inflation to rise too fast. The so-called "fear index" has gained momentum in recent sessions despite trading well below historical levels.

"Nothing", said one well-placed Labour insider.

There she cast herself as the champion of the 52 percent who voted to Leave the European Union, and - stealing Labour's clothes - pledged to represent people who felt left behind by globalization and the march of the metropolitan elites. UKIP's Nuttall came second, but just 79 votes more than the third placed Conservative.

However, with Labour divided over Mr. Corbyn's leadership and Brexit, the bookies strongly suggesting it would fall to the Conservatives this time.

Labour lost the Copeland by-election to the Conservatives after hold the seat and its predecessors since the 1930s.

Labour had fought the campaign arguing that it was best placed to protect a local hospital.

For example, in 1982 at the height of the Falklands War, a Labour MP defected to the Social Democratic Party in the south London seat of Mitcham and Morden.

Before we go nattering on about history and political repercussions, let's cover the basics: a by-election is a system for filling seats which have become vacant in between general elections. "So I think we were pretty upset to lose that seat", she said.

He tweeted: After 7yrs of divisive/disastrous Tory-led Govts, nearly 7% swing away from Labour.
