The academy out the report on this serious issue regarding the health of the children, one of the author of the report Dr. Seth Ammerman in an AAP news release said, "Marijuana is not a benign drug, especially for teens".

Twenty nine states allow medical or recreational use of marijuana for adults over 21, and doctors are anxious many parents who use the drug may think it's OK for kids. "Teenagers are at a critical time of brain development, and they have lifelong impacts from marijuana use during adolescence".

The report doesn't provide any new science though, and instead simply reiterates the Academy's already stated disapproval of recreational marijuana legalization.

"Parents really need to model behaviors of drug use".

Although there are now no initiatives to legalize the recreational use of marijuana for minors and marijuana is still a federally controlled substance, changes in the legal status of marijuana, even if limited to adults, may affect use among adolescents by decreasing the perceived risk of harm or through the marketing of legal marijuana, despite restrictions that prohibit marketing and advertising to this age group. Some studies show that using marijuana at a young age is more likely to lead to addiction than starting to use it in adulthood.
