Neil Gorsuch Is Officially Confirmed To the Supreme Court

Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who has been recovering from back surgery, did not vote.

Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's first major court nominee, will fill the seat that has been vacant since Justice Antonin Scalia passed away in February of 2016.

Gorsuch's nomination was controversial from the onset.

Chuck Grassley (R-IA) took to the floor immediately after confirmation to thank his staff for their work throughout the momentous proceedings. Democrats scoffed at the notion, instead pegging him as a pro-business ideologue who would side with big corporations over everyday Americans. He will serve Americans and the Constitution with honor! CNN reported the vote to be 54-45, with only three democrats voting to confirm the Colorado judge.

"[Gorsuch] has sterling credentials, an excellent record, and an ideal judicial temperament", McConnell said in a statement.

The Senate's 52 Republicans threatened to use the nuclear option to break the filibuster and did so on Thursday.

At the beginning, we were playing with a fast counter-attack but after the second goal we lost our concentration for a little bit and that's when the game was lost".

Democrats opposed Gorsuch in part because Senate Republicans blocked former President Barack Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland, last year.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a senior Republican, warned of the implications of lowering the 60-vote threshold for Supreme Court nominees, thereby eliminating any role for the minority party in ratifying the selection. "In doing so, they have deeply damaged the integrity of the Senate and the Supreme Court itself".

Capping a year of debate and drama, the GOP-controlled Senate on Friday reached a majority and confirmed Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch.

The maneuvering played out in a tense Senate chamber with most members in their seats, a rare and theatrical occurrence. As Democrats filibustered Gorsuch's nomination, McConnell followed through on threats to invoke what was called the "nuclear option" - voting the change Senate rules to allow Trump's pick to proceed by simple majority.

Mr. Grassley told reporters he thinks the next Supreme Court confirmation will be just as partisan if another seat were to open up during Mr. Trump's presidency.

But McConnell and some of his allies argued that they were simply returning to a time not long ago when judicial filibusters were rarely practiced and Supreme Court filibusters essentially unheard of.
