The Worcester County District Attorney's Office announced on Saturday that 31-year-old Angelo Colon-Ortiz has been arrested in the connection to the murder of Vanessa Marcotte.

Sources say the suspect, Angel Cordero Ortiz, was taken into custody Friday night in Worcester.

Early said the person of interest was driving a dark-colored SUV in the area of Marcotte's death about the time she was reported missing in Princeton, Massachusetts.

University student killed in Venezuela opposition protest
Protester Alejandro Navas, a law student, said he was in the streets to demand elections at every level, including presidential. He was in Cuba on Tuesday for a gathering of the Bolivarian Alliance, a leftist coalition of 11 Latin-American nations.

Marcotte, a 27-year-old former Google employee, was killed while jogging near her mother's house on August 7, 2016. When she didn't return after an afternoon run, her family called police, who discovered her body in the woods off a two-lane road, a half-mile from her mother's home.

Prosecutors have charged Colon-Ortiz with aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery, and assault with the intent to rape. State Police troopers had spoken with Colon-Ortiz earlier in the investigation after observing him in a truck that matched descriptions of a vehicle seen near the crime scene. Several outlets are reporting that an arrest was made in the case of Vanessa Marcotte, a 27-year-old Boston University grad whose body was found after she went out for a jog while visiting her family in Princeton last August. According to a WCVB report in February, her hands, feet and part of her head had been burned.

The identification of the suspect has not yet been released.

Authorities received thousands of tips related to the case.
