Somalia: Dozens More US Troops Deployed to Somalia

by Linda Olson April 16, 2017, 2:15

Charles Prichard, a spokesman for U.S. Africa Command, said in an e-mail to CNN: "The objective of this particular train and equip mission is to improve the logistical capacity of the Somali National Army and the focus will be on teaching basic logistics operations, which will allow Somalia forces to better fight al Shabab". "The forward presence of USA forces in Somalia coincides with a spike in airstrikes against al-Shabab", writes Stripes' John Vandiver, "which was the target of at least 14 strikes or raids in 2016 compared with only a handful a year earlier".

Other than a small number of counterterrorism advisers, the arrival of the 101st's soldiers in Somalia's capital marks the first time conventional USA troops have had a presence there since the aborted United Nations mission that yielded the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993. "We tell you if you do not accept peace, we will come to you at your hideouts", Mohamed said.

Al-Shabab, part of al-Qaeda, has a strong presence in many rural parts of Somalia and often stages attacks in the capital, Mogadishu, and elsewhere.

According to the US Africa Command, the latest deployment will help to train the Somalia National Army (SNA).

Government critics say publicly declaring war will only help the militants by inspiring them to carry out additional attacks aimed at disrupting any ongoing military plan against them.

Not as warm, but still mild this afternoon with sunshine
Temperatures will stay warm for Easter Weekend, with a high of 79 degrees for Saturday and 74 degrees for Easter Sunday . Easter Weekend will see readings in the in the 70s with dry weather on Saturday and a chance for storms Easter Sunday .

Farmajo and the Somali government have undertaken a number of aggressive military reforms and an aggressive bombing campaign targeting al Shabaab.

President Farmajo is willing to negotiate with the jihadists or a face-off which will see him eliminate them within a space of two years in a war that he declared a week ago. They are poorly equipped, however, and lack regular salaries.

The new deployment, which US African Command (AFRICOM) is presented as a simple training operation, will be the first time US ground troops are officially deployed to Somalia, though of course the US has had some special forces present on the ground on and off, conducting occasional operations and spotting for US airstrikes.

This month marks 10 years since the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) started.

Despite inflicting military setbacks and territory loss upon al-Shabab, the militants continue to create chaos in the country, as fears grow that al-Shabab and Islamic State are too much for the country to handle.
