Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu Hayle and Atsede Baysa will line up among the world's top distance runners on Monday to defend their Boston Marathon titles, with tens of thousands of spectators expected to line the course amid tight security. In 1967, Katherine Switzer, became the first woman to officially enter the Boston Marathon.

Following the incident in the now-iconic photo, Switzer went on to complete the marathon in about four hours and 20 minutes.

Unlike in 1967, this time she'll be an honorary starter in the race.

Keflezighi, who plans to retire from racing after the New York City marathon in November, stopped after his victory to touch the hand of Bill Richard, whose 8-year-old son Martin was the youngest person to die in the bombing. He continued, "I'm not going to go up to other amputees and be like, 'You can do it!' Instead, I hope that some people see what I've done and it invokes that fire within them to get over whatever is holding them back".

Geoffrey Kirui, also of Kenya, won the mens' race at 2:09:37 - his first-ever marathon victory. As she tells it, there were no official written rules saying only men could enter the race. A race official tried to physically pull her off the race course - a scene that was captured by local media at the time and which only proved to Switzer how important it was for her to finish the race, which she did. Guiding Eyes for the Blind CEO Thomas Panek, who will be running Boston, visited the finish line with two other puppies on Sunday - these were a few weeks old already - and attracted a lot of attention. While attending Syracuse University she practiced with the men's cross country team, where she met coach Arnie Briggs, who completed the Boston Marathon himself.

One day after the Easter Bunny was hopping all over MA, thousands of runners hit the road to race in the Boston Marathon.

Depending on their age group, runners need to get a BQ - short for Boston qualifier - at a previous marathon.

Every year, some streets are closed, every hotel is booked, and the city of Boston and its' surrounding towns welcome runners from the next town over, and around the world, to participate.

Sculptor Pablo Eduardo was chosen unanimously by the families to design the markers that will be placed on the two bombing sites on Boylston Street.

The field started at 9:32 a.m. But if she could run the distance in practice he promised to take her to Boston. They'll be followed at 10 a.m.by the elite men.
