Indian officials to lose red beacon lights atop their cars

Prime Minister Modi made a decision to end VIP culture by deciding to strike off the rule that allowed high dignitaries to use red beacons and flashers on their vehicles. He also went on to remove the red beacon light from his auto becoming the one of the first ministers to do so.

According to the government, vehicles with beacon lights have no place in a democratic country.

Punjab's new Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, prohibited the use of red beacons soon after coming into power, except for vehicles belonging to a few high dignitaries. Red beacons are installed on the vehicles of VIPs including judges of the Supreme Court.

There are some procedures the government would have to take before the new rules come into effect, Gadkari said.

The decision, he said, was taken to strengthen "healthy democratic values" in the country.

He further said the use of sirens by ministers is not legal as these can be used only by pilot police vehicles.

India will ban ministers and senior officials from using red beacons on their cars to speed through traffic. "Today my auto is without a red light, I feel really great pleasure and pride", the minister told NDTV.

In many states, even legislators blatantly use beacon lights. After Chouhan's decision, politicians started vying with each other in getting the beacons removed from their vehicles. More recently Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had made a decision to do away with red beacons while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had banned use of hooters and sirens by ministers.

"It is more precisely the Prime Minister's decision".

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced he would stop using the red beacon from Thursday.

PM Modi demonstrated his own conviction for ending this culture last week, when his convoy moved "in normal traffic" - without any route restrictions or road blocks-to the Delhi airport to receive Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The AAP government in Delhi was the first to declare in February 2015 that its ministers won't use red beacons in their official cars.
