A civilian was also shot.

Brown had claimed on his Facebook page to be the New Black Panther Party's longtime national minister of defense.

Emergency responders were treating the civilian around 11:30 a.m.in a neighborhood east of downtown when another person approached, opened fired and critically injured the paramedic, according to a statement released early Monday by the city.

Residents of Reynolds Avenue have been told to stay indoors and take cover, local Fox4News reports.

The condition of the paramedic is not known, though Dallas Fire-Rescue confirms the injured firefighter was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas and is undergoing surgery.

At the news conference Monday afternoon, Pughes said officers received a tip the suspected gunman was hiding in a nearby house. The paramedic, who was taken to Baylor University Medical Center, will have to undergo more surgeries.

The Dallas paramedic and citizen shot by the suspect late Monday morning are both in the ICU.

Police said they were looking for a suspect who may be armed with a rifle. Brown had apparently shot himself to death, Blankenbaker said. During that time, officers are believed to have been going door-to-door searching for the suspected gunman.

Once in, the robot located the body of the man believed to be the shooter and another person. The initial call erroneously suggested that the gunshot could have been self-inflicted.

The victim originally had been described as a firefighter; officials later said he is a fire department paramedic.

He has lost a lot of blood, Lopez reported, and "coded three times". At least one gunshot pierced an artery, and his leg was broken by a bullet.

Dallas Police form a perimeter after the shooting.

The Dallas Police Association tweeted that a fireman had been shot and officers were "pinned down by gunfire".

It is believed the gunman was in the street shooting at that point, Pughes said. That person is in stable condition, according to Dallas police.

Coatney said the department is looking into whether to change the policy of whether paramedics carry the armor in rescue vehicles.

A body found last week has been positively identified as that of a 14-year-old hiker who went missing more than two weeks ago while in the bottom of the Grand Canyon during a family trip. That's when police said 36-year-old Derick Lamont Brown opened fire on him.

There are several streets closed in the area of Dolphin and I-30. Brown pleaded guilty and got two years of probation.
