ATS arrests hawala operator for supplying terror funds

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Thursday arrested Javed Naviwala, an alleged hawala trader whose employee Altaf Qureshi was on Wednesday arrested by the counter-terror agency on suspicions of being an agent of the Pakistani spy agency Inter Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI).

In a joint operation conducted by the ATS, central and state intelligence agencies, Ali was picked up from Faizabad.

Ali had been allegedly approached by the ISI operatives over the phone in 2014 after his visa to meet his relatives in Pakistan was rejected by the high commission three times, an unidentified official told Hindustan Times.

After Qureshi was arrested from south Mumbai by Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, Rajkot police started probe into his links in Gujarat, said Rajkot Superintendent of Police Antrip Sood. Naviwala relayed the instructions to Qureshi and he then sent the money to the account, which was Ali's.

In the application seeking his police remand, the ATS said that since the accused has admitted that he was a spy of the Pakistani intelligence outfit, his custodial interrogation was required. "Aftab returned to India on June 28, 2016, and was in constant touch with officials of Pakistan High Commission", the ADG said.

Will respond to Pak at time and place of our choosing: Army
The Army Chief was briefed by the Corps Commander Lt Gen J S Sandhu on the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army vowed that the "despicable act" by Pakistani soldiers would be "appropriately responded [to]".

Aftab was also allegedly keeping a close vigil on the movement of troops in the area, especially between Faizabad and Lucknow, besides deployment of battalions, an ATS release said.

The hawala operator, who was in the business at the behest of one Jawed Naviwala, was nabbed after his name cropped up during interrogation of Aftab, who was held from Faizabad yesterday, the official added.

The operation was being led by Additional SP Rajesh Sahni.

"The group, allegedly trained by Pakistan's ISI, has reportedly been asked to target Ayodhya (in Faizabad district), Varanasi, Vrindavan, and the Taj Mahal in Agra", UP police said. Also, officials have recovered some suspicious messages from Naviwala.

The trio was involved in an espionage racket, said Arun. A Khurasan module was unearthed after Saifullah's death in March.
