Horschel defeats Day on first hole of playoff

by Marta Holmes May 22, 2017, 15:40

James Hahn shot a bogey-free 6-under 64 to take the lead after three rounds at the AT&T Byron Nelson, where Jason Kokrak's record advantage disappeared.

"Tell me what my tee time is tomorrow and I'll just show up", he said. "It was a battle all day between James, Jason and I. Somebody was looking out for me today".

Horschel shot a 69 on Sunday to Day's 68 to get into the playoff and watched on as Day missed a four-foot putt for par that would have sent the tournament to a second playoff hole. He just missed a miraculous eagle at the 18th hole that would have gotten him in the playoff with his playing partners - threesomes were used after early morning rain delayed the start Sunday.

"When I hit it I knew it was on a ideal line and I thought I got it to the hole". Horschel's 20-foot putt came up just short, and he finished up for par, not expecting it to be the last shot of his week.

But at the first playoff hole, the 18th, Day flared his nine iron shot a little right and left himself with a hard, downhill 15-metre putt which ran by the hole, the former world No. 1 thinking at one point that it was rattling in.

"I came here without any type of momentum, and the only thing I can hang my hat on was my practice sessions for the last several months have gone well leading to the tournaments", Horschel said. "And I don't want to leave".

In 1968, the tournament became the first named after a PGA Tour player. "It's a little disappointing, but it's not the first tournament I'm going to lose".

"Billy's been playing impressive golf all the season, and it was just a matter of time before - kaboom baby - he was the man at the top of the leaderboard", PXG founder Bob Parsons said. "I'd rather be stalking people than any other way". He played this week hoping to make steps toward reaching those bigger goals, and he got more than perhaps he expected.

Defending champion and recent Masters victor Sergio Garcia of Spain went out in 40 before settling for a 74 and finishing in a tie for 20th at 276. "I had my. good breaks for the week, and I wasn't going to beg for the last shot".

He missed badly, giving Horschel his first win since 2014.

World number one and U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson was firmly in contention after 36 holes this week, but he got caught in quicksand over the weekend to finish tied for 13th at six under.

"I got to try to get better from this experience and I feel good about my game".

The individual champion will be crowned Monday and the top eight teams will advance to match play.
