Kelly on non-criminal ICE arrestees: 'not the valedictorians'

ICE officials in Southern California arrested almost 200 persons Thursday, most of whom had prior criminal convictions.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Fugitive Operations officer makes an arrest.

The White House supported this claim with examples of those seized in ICE operations this year, including hardened repeat offenders from gangs like MS-13 caught in last month;s Operation Community Shield against gang members that yielded 1,378 arrests.

The only noncriminal alien arrested during the local operation was a Mexican national who had been previously deported and illegally re-entered the U.S., Kice said.

Officials say nearly 75 percent of those arrested during this period in 2017 are convicted criminals, with offenses ranging from homicide and assault to sexual abuse and drug-related charges.

Among those who had previous criminal convictions, 43 were for drug offenses, 27 for domestic violence and 30 for driving under the influence.

"By taking these individuals off the streets and removing them from the country, we're making our communities safer for everyone", he added.

"These statistics reflect President Trump's commitment to enforce our immigration laws fairly and across the board", ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan said in the report.

Lea Michele cries after meeting Celine Dion at the BBMAs
I knew when she saw it and she tried it on, it was just [gasp], and when you have that [gasp], you know it's the right one. Her rendition earned a standing ovation from the audience and praise from show hosts Ludacris and Vanessa Hudgens .

While the vast majority of arrestees were from Mexico - 146 - they also came from countries including Russia, Armenia, Thailand, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia and Guatemala.

While conducting what ICE called "targeted enforcement operations", agents often encounter other people who may be in the country illegally. In the Trump administration, agents are able to arrest anyone in violation of immigration law.

The majority - 146 - are from Mexico while two are from Russian Federation and one from Cambodia. ICE arrested 93 in Los Angeles County, 26 in Riverside County, 23 in Orange County, 21 in San Bernardino County, 14 in Ventura County and 11 in Santa Barbara County. Those individuals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and arrested by ICE, when appropriate.

"His daughter is active-duty military, his son-in-law is active-duty military", Pasquarella said.

The raids are seen as US President Donald Trump's attempt to deliver on his campaign pledge of deporting as many as three million undocumented immigrants.

In Southern California, however, arrests have remained relative flat, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"This is part of their, I think, public relations strategy to say they're going after people with certain convictions but, of course, it doesn't tell the whole story of who these people are and the harm that is brought by targeting them and whether it's really a sound choice", Pasquarella said.

The individuals who do not face criminal prosecution will be processed for deportation.
