Rahul Gandhi defies orders, heads for strife-torn Saharanpur

Despite being denied permission by the authorities, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday set out to visit riot-hit Saharanpur.

The fallout of these incidents has been the emergence of a new generation of Dalit leaders like the 30-year-old lawyer, Chandrashekhar Azad "Ravan", who led the so-called Bhim Army (named after the Dalit icon, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar) for protests against the Saharanpur violence in Delhi's Jantar Mantar.

The fact that the Chief Minister himself is a Thakur hasn't helped in restoring amity between the two communities, especially when overzealous officials told the Mushahars, another Dalit group, to wash themselves with soap and use deodorants before Yogi Adityanath visited their Mainpur Kot village in Kushinagar district.

Meanwhile, a four-member team led by Home Secretary Mani Prasad Mishra and comprising ADG (Law and Order) Aditya Mishra, IG STF Amitabh Yash and DIG (Security) Vijay Bhushan reached Saharanpur late on Tuesday night.

The administration's move did not go down well with the Congress party which said "nothing will be able to stop us". Doesn't it show the anti-Dalit mindset of the BJP government?

Amid continuing spate of caste-related violence in Saharanpur, Uttar Pardesh government has called the incidents "well planned conspiracy" adding that strong action is being taken against elements responsible for it.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Friday took on the Yogi Adityanath government on law and order issues in the state that have been grabbing headlines lately.

While Bablu Kumar has been posted as SSP, Saharanpur, Pramod Kumar Pandey will be the new DM, the official said.

Saharanpur has witnessed widespread caste based clashes repeatedly this month.

Heavy force has been deployed in Saharanpur since violence broke out on May 5.

The crack down was made after government found that despite of dispatching a battery of senior police officers and a strong contingent of reserved police force, fresh case of stray incidents of firing and stabbing were reported from two places in Saharanpur in which three persons were seriously injured and shifted to hospital on Wednesday.

The state government on Wednesday suspended the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, and the Divisional Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector General were transferred out.
