Frightening wreck knocks Scott Dixon out of Indianapolis 500

by Garry Watts May 29, 2017, 9:08

Lap 55 of the 101st running of the Indy 500 would be one of the most memorable as pole sitter Scott Dixon would go airborne before crashing into an inside wall.

The crash sent Dixon's auto airborne, and pieces of the vehicle flew off as it flipped and twisted through the air before hitting the top of the wall.

Dixon was checked, cleared and released from the infield auto center but started to limp, and so returned to get a walking boot fitted. Howard was not hurt.

"I'm fine. I'm really glad Scott's OK as he was a victim of this", said Howard told reporters.

"A little bit beaten up", Dixon said in a television interview following the crash.

The race was red flagged on Lap 55 to allow safety teams to clean up a significant amount of debris from both cars, as well as to fix safety fencing on the inside of the track.

Dixon's Chip Ganassi Racing Honda went airborne, flying over the top of Helio Castroneves before landing on the inside SAFER barrier, ripping the rear end of his machine off.

The Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay teases about chosen man
The 32-year-old construction sales rep pulled an Alexis Waters by showing up in full costume - though this time, it was a penguin. Oh, and there's Dean who upon first meeting Rachel , quipped something like, "once you try black, you never go back".

Former two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso is scored in first place, followed by last year's Indy 500 victor, Alexander Rossi and Takuma Sato.

"We had nowhere to go, and that happens". I was hoping Jay was going to stay up at the wall.

"I am just bummed for the team".

Dixon spoke with a Verizon pit reporter Katie Osborne after the incident, and casually referred to his insane ordeal as a "wild ride" where he simply felt as though he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Bourdais, who was at the track Sunday, joined Franchitti in visiting Dixon at the care center.

The accident came a little over a week after a hard crash into the outside of the Turn 2 wall sent Sebastien Bourdais to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for a fractured pelvis.
