European Union leader urges Trump not to ditch Paris climate deal

WASHINGTON, June 1 President Donald Trump on Thursday will announce his decision on whether to keep the United States in a global pact to fight climate change, as a source close to the matter said he was preparing to pull out of the Paris accord. "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!", he said.

Multiple news outlets, citing unnamed sources, reported that the president plans to make good on a key campaign promise by removing the USA from the 2015 agreement aimed at limiting global warming.

Everyone cautioned that no decision was final until Trump announced it.

Some northern European countries are criticizing the USA for its expected withdrawal from the Paris climate accords.

"We will continue to lead", the mayors said in a statement.

Some of the biggest gains in tackling carbon emissions in the U.S. had been made at state level rather than federal level, he added.

"China and the European Union. will implement the agreement", a senior European Union official told reporters on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity. Pearce also compared to the Paris Agreement to the "job-destroying" cap-and-trade carbon reduction plan that was defeated in Congress in 2010.

While not mentioning the U.S.by name, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying tells reporters climate change is a "global challenge" that no country can ignore. With a couple of leaks and tweets, the Trump White House is veering away from Republican priorities of repeal-and-replace and tax reform onto its backfoot, staggering to put a sensible gloss on another erratic non-sequitur. For example, there are no sanctions if the United States breaks its promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 26% to 28% below 2005 levels by 2025.

Nancy Pelosi, one of the top Democrats in Congress, described the apparent decision as a "stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet's future".

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe swiftly condemned the test and vowed concerted action with its USA ally. President Donald Trump has alternated in his public statements between bellicosity and flattery.

The Kremlin says Russian Federation is committed to the Paris climate change accords. "I can get back to you".

He also warned Trump that it might not be as easy as he thinks to withdraw from the treaty. By 2035, it is estimated that more than $2.5 trillion in gross domestic product will be lost if the United States follows through on Obama's commitments.

A dozen large groups including oil major BP, agrochemical giant DuPont, Google, Intel and Microsoft, have urged Trump to remain part of the deal.

When former President Barack Obama formally entered into the Paris Agreement in 2016, he did so as an "executive agreement" in which he didn't need Senate approval.

"But of course everybody on the climate change side of things is saying this is nothing to play with, build suspense about".

"The entire discussion about climate was very hard, if not to say very dissatisfying".

China overtook the U.S. as the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in 2007.

The agreement makes provision for parties to quit, but notice can be given only three years after its entry into force.
