White House: Trump, Netanyahu pledge to work together to combat terrorism

by Garry Watts June 5, 2017, 6:48

The area above the Wall is claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians as a sacred religious site, and Trump's visit to the Wall signifies Trump's support for Israel, experts said.

Still, White House officials had downplayed the prospects for a breakthrough on this trip, saying it was important to manage their ambitions as they wade into terrain that has tripped up more experienced diplomats.

The committee for the Freedom and Dignity strike called for a day of rage to take place on Tuesday, when US President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Abbas' newfound willingness to cooperate can be seen as a response to Trump's strong rhetoric regarding his commitment to make what he has called "the ultimate deal" between the two historically hostile nations.

"Bilateral relations will be much better under Trump because he has a similar worldview as Netanyahu", Phillips said.

It is a stark symbol for Palestinians of Israel's 50-year occupation of the West Bank, and in Bethlehem the wall has been covered with graffiti and street art.

"I am committed to trying to achieve a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians and I intend to do everything I can to help them achieve that goal".

North Korea announces new missile, which appears to be a Scud variant
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe swiftly condemned the test and vowed concerted action with its USA ally. President Donald Trump has alternated in his public statements between bellicosity and flattery.

Trump is now on his first overseas trip since becoming president of the United States.

His visit to Palestine included delivering remarks in front of a backdrop of Palestinian flags, but Trump didn't mention a two-state solution, as has been mentioned in the past.

Mr. Abbas reiterated to Mr. Trump "our commitment to cooperate with you in order to make peace and forge a historic peace deal" and to become partners with the USA against terrorism. "He wants peace", he said.

"I have come to this sacred and ancient land to reaffirm the unbreakable bond between the United States and the State of Israel", Trump declared at the welcome ceremony, where he was greeted by Israel's leaders, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. Going off-script in one of his speeches, Mr Trump contrasted his support for Israel with the previous administration's coolness, saying it was a "big, big, attractive difference".

Trump also visited Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial, and left what many noted was a brief message compared to his predecessor's. He has already visited Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Trump was enthusiastically received by Netanyahu, who leapt to his feet when the president declared that his administration "will always stand with Israel". "But with determination, compromise and the belief that peace is possible, Israelis and Palestinians can make a deal". Netanyahu effusively praised Trump before his museum address and sprang to his feet to lead applause for him several times.
