Casino attack should not hurt investments: finance chief

The burnt body of the gunman was found in a hotel room inside the complex about five hours later, police chief Ronald dela Rosa said.

The gunman is believed to have walked inside the casino via the parking garage with the automatic rifle at his side.

"We can not attribute this to terrorism", Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director-General Ronald dela Rosa said Thursday evening.

Police said casino security shot and wounded the gunman, who then retreated to a hotel room and doused himself in gasoline and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. De la Rosa says the gunman seized millions of pesos worth of gambling chips and that no one was hurt by gunfire.

"For now, we can say that this is not an act of terror".

Outside the complex, relatives of people trapped waited today to hear news of their loved ones. Thirty-seven people died of suffocation and smoke inhalation, and many others were injured in the resulting stampede, according to multiple reports.

Thick smoke from fires set by the suspect delayed a search of the building, but officers later discovered them during clearing operations, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Oscar Albayalde said.

He said the woman was not moving afterwards, but he did not know what happened to her.

The unrest in Marawi had sparked fears that militants might attack elsewhere to divert the focus of thousands of troops trying to quell the siege.
