Leo Varadkar Becomes Ireland's Youngest, 1st Openly Gay PM

Mr Varadkar will head a minority government with the backing of the Independent Alliance, two Independent TDs and a confidence and supply agreement with the main opposition party Fianna Fail.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams challenged Mr Varadkar to adopt the approach of former Fianna Fáil taoiseach Albert Reynolds and to "do the right thing" on the North. Mr Adams also said he feared "Mr Varadkar will drag this Government to the right".

"He represents a modern, diverse and inclusive Ireland and speaks for them like no other, an Ireland in which each person can fulfil their potential and live their dreams".

Mr Kenny, from Castlebar, Co Mayo, took over as Fine Gael leader in 2002 when the party suffered near annihilation at the polls.

The 38-year-old Mr Varadkar, the right-wing son of an immigrant Indian doctor, is expected to be elected Ireland's youngest and first gay premier.

On Wednesday afternoon, Varadkar will meet with President Michael D. Higgins to sign the papers that officially make him prime minister.

"So the government that I lead will be one of the new European center as we seek to build a republic of opportunity", he continued, "and that is a republic in which every citizen has a fair go and has the opportunity to succeed and in which every part of the country has the chance to share in our prosperity".

Garry Monk: "All the boxes were ticked at Middlesbrough"
Monk insists that the prospect of leading Boro back up to the Premier League at the first attempt is the right challenge for him. Do you believe Monk? "It is about looking who is here, assessing them and maybe trying to add to the squad".

Eoghan Murphy, who had a junior ministry in the Department of Finance and ran Mr Varadkar's leadership campaign, is one of those being touted for a promotion to the senior ranks. He announced he was gay several months before a 2015 referendum made Ireland the world's first country to legalize same-sex marriage via referendum.

"I think he restored it, people got to know Ireland because they knew Enda Kenny".

In a coming-out speech he gave in a radio interview, he had said, "It's not something that defines me".

His family originates from Varad in Maharashta's Sindhudurg district, and Leo Varadkar kept his Indian connect alive, completing an internship at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.

"Leadership should never be about just one person", he said.

In 2011, Fine Gael appointed Mr Varadkar as minister for transport, tourism and sport - and then health minister.

Mr Martin said it was certainly true Mr Varadkar's views would be significantly more right wing on most economic topics than the centre-ground consensus.
