A 66-year-old IL man has been identified as the suspect in the shooting of a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, injuring at least one member of the House of Representatives.
CBS News reports the suspect has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of IL.
As a gunman opened fire on GOP congressman at a baseball practice Wednesday morning outside the nation's capitol, a few miles away congressional Democrats were having a practice of their own. Among those hit were Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the House's majority whip.
"Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime, and the assailant has now died from his injuries", Trump said.
"The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely", Trump said.
The White House also canceled a "listening session" on tax reform with top economic adviser Gary Cohn and auto industry leaders. Trump said Scalise "was badly wounded and is now in stable condition".
"I think the security detail saved a lot of lives because they attacked the shooter", said U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, who manages the team and witnessed the shooting.

Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., who represents the Illinois Quad-Cities, also reacted with alarm, saying her thoughts and prayers are with those wounded or otherwise affected.
A statement issued by President Donald Trump said the situation was being monitored. I am grateful for the courage of the Capitol Police and their quick actions this morning. We are deeply saddened. He would not confirm whether the suspect was among the five people taken to hospital.
"Our fearless Capitol police perform a challenging job with incredible skill", Trump said.
