Arrest warrants out for Turkish agents, others in DC melee

In addition to the 12 Turkish security officers and police, prosecutors also announced felony assault charges against two Americans and two Canadians in connection with the violence.

Some Turkish security officials were briefly detained at the time by US law enforcement for their role in the brawl, but they were released on the scene because "customary global law affords heads of state and members of their entourage with inviolability from arrest and detention", a State Department official told ABC News at the time.

In the statement, the Foreign Ministry said it summoned the American ambassador upon learning that the U.S. authorities have issued arrest warrants for some Turkish citizens and some of the security personnel of our president, due to the incident that took place in front of the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington, DC on May 16th.

Seven Turkish agents would be charged with felonies and five agents would face misdemeanor charges, according to the AP.

Mr Erdogan's security detail returned with him to Turkey after his visit, so it is unclear if any will face legal repercussions in the US.

Whether or not the Turkish citizens, who were all either Turkish security officers or Turkish police officers, will ever actually face charges in the USA remains to be seen.

It is unlikely that Turkey would extradite the men to the United States. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Tom Cotton (R-AR) all demanded an apology from the Turkish government, while the U.S. House of Representatives passed a 397-0 resolution condemning the violence.

"If they attempt to enter the United States, they will be arrested", DC Police Chief Peter Newsham warned at a news conference Thursday morning, calling the attack "extreme in nature".

White House defends Trump as scathing tweets raise concern
JULIE DAVIS: They are the statements that are the most in Trump's voice of anything we get from this White House . Yet the president's tweets , while informal, do not stick to topics of no effect .

However, the Turkish Embassy said protesters had provoked Turkish-Americans who were there to greet the president, and they in turn responded in self-defence.

Earlier Wednesday, police said two men were arrested for their role in the fracas. U.S. Marshals detained two more on June 14 - one in Virginia and one in New Jersey.

The video then apparently shows Erdogan getting out of the auto and watching for a few seconds.

It was not the first time Mr Erdogan's bodyguards had become violent while visiting the United States.

Two people, at least one of them a protester, had previously been charged.

"When they come here, they insist only US security be responsible for the protection of their officials and they don't want our police to provide assistance".

The police statement did not say if the men were supporters of Erdogan, part of his security detail or protesters. Nine people were eventually hospitalised, some with serious injuries.
