Trump delays effective date of travel ban amid court battle

The Trump administration is pushing back on claims that President Donald Trump's travel ban is soon set to expire.

The White House memo "should be construed to amend the executive order" and was issued "in light of questions in litigation about the effective date of the enjoined provisions and in the interest of clarity", the White House said. The ruling by a three-judge bench of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit was against the revised travel ban. Watson blocked those portions of the travel ban before they could go into effect.

The U.S. Supreme Court has closed a loophole that class action plaintiffs in the Ninth Circuit had been exploiting to obtain immediate appellate review of a district court's denial of class certification.

The ruling given on Monday against the travel ban was yet another block against Trump's efforts to prohibit entry of citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days while the United States government reviews their screening procedures. The 4th Circuit found the policy unconstitutional on that basis.

Trump issued his initial travel ban on a Friday in late January, bringing chaos and protests to airports around the country.

Justices strike down gender differences in citizenship law
Unwed American mothers, meanwhile, are only subject to a 1-year US residency requirement to give their children USA citizenship. His father, who was unwed when Morales-Santana was born, was 20 days short of satisfying the five-year residency requirement.

The order also suspends the nation's refugee program for 120 days and imposes a new limit on the number of refugees accepted.

"And yet again, these revisions underline that the one thing the president has consistently wanted throughout is a Muslim ban", he added.

Several states and civil rights groups also challenged the revised ban, saying it remained rooted in discrimination and exceeded the president's authority. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court lifted that narrow part of their stay on the executive order while maintaining other stays that prevent wider implementation. The appeals court said Judge Watson had erred in barring the administration from conducting internal reviews of its vetting procedures while the case moved forward. The 4th Circuit's ruling took that question head-on, agreeing that the ban officially disfavored Islam-as evidenced by Trump's campaign statements calling for a "total and complete shutdown" on Muslims entering the USA -and was thus unconstitutional.

Given the high court's looming summer recess-the spring term ends on June 26-the schedule is tight for everyone and tensions may run high this month even for the usually cool justices.

CCP waded into one recent case, Susan B. Anthony List v. Driehaus decided by the Supreme Court in 2014, which ruled in favor of challengers to an OH law prohibiting false statements during a political campaign.
