US Vice President Pence hires Watergate veteran as personal lawyer

"The Vice President has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel", Pence communications director Jared Agen said in a statement yesterday.

That's according to a statement from Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen.

According to the Washington Post, Vice President Mike Pence has retained outside counsel to handle inquiries related to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe. Cullen also previously served as Virginia's Attorney General in the late 1990s.

Aides said the vice president had considered several candidates before settling on Cullen and made his final decision earlier this week. Paul Trible, R-Va., during the Iran-Contra investigation, worked for former Rep. Caldwell Butler, R-Va., during the Watergate investigation, was lead counsel to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay during the investigation into his ties with lobbyist Jack Abramoff and was on President George W. Bush's legal team during the Florida recount in the 2000 presidential election.

The lawyer, Richard Cullen, is a former Virginia attorney general and a former USA attorney for the eastern district of Virginia.

Cullen is no stranger to high-profile federal investigations.

Pence's visit comes one day before President Donald Trump is expected to also stop into Miami to talk about changes to the U.S. -Cuba policy.

The Washington Post first reported Pence was hiring counsel.

Mueller and congressional committees are investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible connections with Trump's campaign. He lashed out on Twitter Thursday, writing, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" He delivered an on-camera statement sharply criticizing James Comey after the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's recent testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
