Nebraska preliminary May jobless rate drops to 2.9 percent

State labor statistics released Friday show that Madison, Stanton and Pierce Counties saw their unemployment rate hold at 2.5% in May. The DWD says Indiana's total private employment stands at 3,900 above the November 2016 peak. Indiana's labor force shrank in May, the first time it's done so in five months. Leisure and hospitality posted the largest decrease, followed by professional and business services.

The U.S. Labor Department said unemployment rates were lower in nine states, higher in three states and stable in 38 states and Washington in May.

Zeller said the growth in government jobs in May was promising.

Trade, transportation and utilities gained 500 jobs from April 2017 to May 2017.

Hannah Halbert, workforce researcher with Policy Matters Ohio, agreed. Manufacturing declined 0.7%, or 8,900 jobs, while mining and logging dropped 6.9%, or 1,700 jobs. Maryland has added 43,100 jobs since May 2016. "It's a testament to the attractiveness of Georgia's job market when we continue to see more and more individuals enter and re-enter the job market and find employment". Other services lost 900 jobs.

"Reductions in manufacturing are largely tied to temporary layoffs in the auto industry", he said in an email. "Those who are unemployed or feel they are underemployed are urged to stay positive and take advantage of the resources and job assistance programs offered by their local WorkOne Career Centers".

Trump delays effective date of travel ban amid court battle
Trump issued his initial travel ban on a Friday in late January, bringing chaos and protests to airports around the country. The ruling by a three-judge bench of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit was against the revised travel ban.

He is optimistic about job growth in the state. "May's labor-force participation rate of 66.7%, the highest rate since October 2008, allows for ongoing economic growth". North Carolina added more than 69,000 jobs in the past year. Typically those are slower months for hiring.

May unemployment rate estimates in New England were 2.9 percent in New Hampshire, 3.1 percent in Vermont, 4.2 percent in MA, 4.1 percent in Rhode Island and 4.9 percent in CT.

The rate for the Killeen-Temple area dropped slightly from 4.3 percent in April to 4.2 percent in May.

By design, the report contains more detailed information than that for OH and most states.

Here are the unemployment rates for counties in the coastal region in the May report.

The May unemployment numbers showed an increase of a tenth of a percentage point, increasing the rate to 5.0%. The number of people employed in Norfolk fell by nearly an exact number (62) as the area's labor force did (60). This measures the ratio of the labor force now employed to the total working-age population.
