The biggest indirect tax since Independence, GST removes at least 17 different taxes and transforms India into a single market for seamless movement of goods and services.

According to a finance ministry statement, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and some north-east states are also in the process of abolishing check posts.

Among the states that have removed the checkposts are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The company has started supply of batches on new rates from July 1 from its warehouses, when the new tax structure came into force.

Speaking on the initial feedback received post-GST rollout, Adhia revealed that the new taxation system has been well received.

"Government has asked all the departments to ensure that their is no shortage of products and consumer items in order to keep a check on prices". He also asked departments to be ready to deal with queries of their respective stakeholders concerning GST. He said each department and ministry should make sure that benefits of GST are passed on to consumers which would help keep inflation under control.
