Mother charged with murdering four children and partner grins in court

The four children killed were identified as Isabela Martinez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Dillan Romero, 4; and Axel Romero, 2.

Isabel Cartuna Martinez, 31, appeared in court and her odd actions prompted the judge's advice.

"Right now we believe we have everybody involved in this crime", Cpl Pihera said.

Despite the accusations against her, Martinez looked directly into the TV cameras filming her first appearance hearing on Friday morning and shook her head as the judge read her charges. Police officers and firefighters responded and found Martin Romero and four children deceased, plus the injured Diana Romero, all suffering from apparent stab wounds. Neighbors watch police during the investigation at a home where police say multiple people were found dead, Thursday, July 6, 2017, in Loganville, Ga., east of Atlanta. Authorities also placed her under an hold for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"My attorneys are always going to be the people and my faith", she said in Spanish through an interpreter.

A smiling Isabel Martinez was told by a Gwinnett County judge to stop "playing to the camera" after WGCL reported that the 31-year-old knelt in front of the lenses and was warned to sit back in the bench.

Other cases get less attention, as when a woman kills a newborn or in children's deaths blamed on neglect, said Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in OH and co-author of two books on mothers who have killed children based on about 1,000 cases during the 1990s.

A woman charged with killing four of her young children and their father wagged her finger at a judge as he read the charges against her, prompting the judge to rebuke her about her behavior.

Police had said the Romero and Martinez family lived in a quiet neighborhood, but that changed after a 911 call from inside the mobile home at 4:47 a.m. Thursday. A fifth child also was stabbed but survived.

Thorpe advised Martinez to hire a lawyer or allow one to be appointed. The surviving 9-year-old girl remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

When asked why did not want legal representation, she said that she was there to represent people who are "humble and hardworking; people who suffer" and that God would take care of her.

"This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighbourhood and community".
