Mob sets banks ablaze as policeman shoots truck driver dead in Lagos

Pandemonium broke out yesterday at Creek Road in Apapa, Lagos when dozens of tanker drivers went on rampage over the killing of one of their colleagues by a police officer attached to a branch of Diamond Bank.

According to eyewitness report, the tanker drivers had blocked the entrance of the bank like they were always wont to do, an action that drew the ire of the bank management. This forced several other banks in Apapa to close for the day, forcing most port users to look elsewhere for banks to make financial transactions.

Reports about what really happened are unclear at the time of filing the story, but trouble had reportedly started around 10am over the indiscriminate parking of trailers by the drivers.

Police Authorities in Lagos State say one of its official accused of shooting a tanker driver in Apapa Wharf has been arrested.

It was gathered that the firemen had to leave the area for fear of being brutalised by the tanker drivers and their fire trucks vandalised.

"Security operatives attached to the bank disarmed and arrested the fleeing mobile policeman but did not hand him over to the irate mob".

European Markets Finished Mostly Lower After Late Sell-Off
Inflation remains at 1.3 percent, well below the bank's goal of just under 2 percent it considers best for the economy. Markets will be scrutinising his comments for any signs as to a change in the ECB's stimulus policies.

Angered by the death of their colleague, truck drivers joined by horde of hoodlums were said to have mobilised to the bank to demand the killer mobile policeman be released to them, a request turned by other policemen attached to the bank.

A senior police officer said on condition of anonymity: "Those tanker drivers are very irrational".

The tanker drivers who were angry chased the officer into the bank where he was been protected by security guards.

It took the effort of some soldiers deployed from the Signal Corps of the Nigerian Army (NA) to douse the situation and restore sanity to the area.

Meanwhile, Sterling Bank, in a statement, gave an account of the event. "He ran into the premises of the bank to escape being lynched", the statement read.

A policeman attached to the bank was said to have objected and in the process, a brawl ensued.

In the ensuing melee, the two banks, Diamond Bank and Sterling Bank were torched by irate truckers.
