Newborn's parents accused of giving her drugs to cover heroin withdrawal

A woman went to the couple's home to take care of their pets while they were locked up.

When confronted on the scene by Walmart employees, Wilde ran, dropping the vehicle seat several times while trying to get away.

The father dropped his two-month-old daughter in her auto seat twice while fleeing officers at a Walmart in Spanish Fork, a city around 50 miles south of Salt Lake City, after police were called to reports of a theft at the store. She was arrested on an outstanding warrant, per KUTV.

"It makes me sick to my stomach, for a number of reasons", said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, a spokesperson for the Utah County Sheriff's, told CBS News.

After obtaining a search warrant for the home, investigators found items of drug paraphernalia in several different areas of the home, including next to a baby bassinet and child's sippy cup.

Two of Christenson's other children, ages 2 and 4, tested positive for meth.

A press release from the Utah County Sheriff's Office stated that the parents were attempting to cover up the fact that the child was born addicted to drugs. Christenson and her 29-year-old boyfriend also admitted to crushing pills of Suboxone, a prescription painkiller and applying it to the infant's gums just hours after she was born.

A deputy caught up to Wilde in a nearby parking lot and took him into custody for DUI, heroin, meth, drug paraphernalia and driving without insurance. The parents of the other three children are Wilde and Christenson.

OJ Simpson: Inmate number 1027820
Simpson arrives for his parole hearing at Lovelock Correctional Center, in Lovelock, Nevada, July 20. The decision came after Simpson apologized for the 2007 armed robbery that led to his imprisonment.

His 26-year-old common law wife Christenson waited inside the store with their two sons and one son she had from a previous relationship.

Spanish Fork Police contacted officials with the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) and took custody of the children. The infant girl was checked into a local hospital. The parents of the other three children are Colby Wilde and Lacey Christenson.

Because all four children, who had been living in the home, could be in risky proximity to the paraphernalia and prescription pills Deputies added four counts each for Wilde and Christenson of child endangerment, a third-degree felony.

"But there is plenty of evidence that the drug gets diverted; police seize it, addicts talk about how easy it is to buy". Also lying around was Suboxone, some of it in pill form, the rest of it crushed.

Wilde and Christenson told police they learned from other friends that the drug can be crushed and used to hide their baby's withdrawal symptoms.

A drug test showed the couple's biological sons had methamphetamine in their systems, while their infant daughter tested positive for methamphetamine, heroin and morphine.

Infants born to opioid addicts are usually afflicted by neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which comes with withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, dehydration, hyperactive reflexes, and inability to gain weight. On June 28, Christenson was released from jail and shortly after Wilde was released. The two remain in prison, and their bail has been set at $10,000.

But on July 18, they were both arrested and jailed after investigators served a new search warrant and caught Wilde smoking heroin, police said, adding that they were also booked for distribution of a controlled substance in a drug free zone, a first-degree felony.
