Dominant India crush Sri Lanka to take series lead

He along with Ajinkya Rahane added 51 runs for the fourth wicket to take India to 240 for 3 declare and ask Sri Lanka to chase down 550 runs to win.

It was all too easy for India as they took wickets at regular intervals and were helped by some questionable shot selection - Angelo Mathews a notable culprit as he aimed a wild hack at Ravindra Jadeja and was caught at backward point.

Sri Lanka 291 (Tharanga 64, Mathews 83, Perera 92*; Jadeja 3/67, Shami 2/45) & 245 (Karunaratne 97, Kusal Mendis 36, Niroshan Dickwella 67; Shami 5/43, JAdeja 3/71, Ashwin 3/65).

Earlier in the day, Virat Kohli slammed his 17th century as India declared at 240/3. That's the same spot Abhinav Mukund found himself in when he was drafted into the playing XI after KL Rahul was down with viral fever.

Speaking to the media after the first Test here on Saturday, Herath lauded the Indian team and conceded that his side had failed.

Sri Lanka needed a solid opening stand but their hopes were dashed when Mohammed Shami bowled Upul Tharanga for 10, a relief for Kohli who had dropped the batsman at second slip in the same over. They, however, were expected to give a fight, and take the game to the final day.

Amit Shah fields Rajput as BJP's 3rd candidate
On Thursday, Balwantsinh Rajput, Chief Whip of Congress, Tejshree Patel and P.I.Patel resigned as Congress MLAs and joined BJP. The development came a day after three Congress MLAs quit the grand old party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ).

While Kohli finished unbeaten on 103 off 136 balls, vice-captain Rahane finished on 23 off 18 balls. This was the first time since March 2013 that Sri Lanka conceded 600 runs or more in an innings - the last occasion having been against Bangladesh in a high-scoring draw in 2013. "In the first innings, he didn't get opportunity to bowl much but I think in the second innings, he bowled really nicely on a wicket that wasn't offering much and he kept it in the right areas", he said.

India was 189-3 in its second innings at stumps on Day 3 with Kohli 76 not out. On Day 1, they lost a batsman and a part-time pacer in Asela Gunaratne to injury. Jadeja snared three wickets for 71. Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin and Umesh Yadav, meanwhile, chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Mukund and Kohli piled on the runs after a break for rain, putting on 133 in 30 overs and the loss of Herath, who left the field after he was struck on the middle finger of his bowling hand when misfielding.

In less than six years since making his debut, Ashwin has become the fastest bowler to claim 250 Test wickets, and now needs just 25 more scalps in his next six Tests to become the fastest to 300.

Hence, Twitter hailed team India for winning the first Test and trolled Sri Lankan team for their poor performance both in batting and bowling.
