Amid Sikkim stand-off, Chinese troops transgress into Barahoti in Uttarakhand

Chinese media reports suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, military hardware purchases from Washington, including drones, and India's participation with the USA and Japan in the recent round of Malabar naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal, were influencing the dialogue between China and India on ending the Doklam crisis.

Amid the stand-off in Doklam, Chinese soldiers transgressed into the disputed territory along the global border with India. Incidents of similar nature have happened in the past but are normally sorted out locally and should not be given undue importance,"government sources said".

"They want to end the status quo of this trijunction unilaterally", she added.

On July 19, government officials found People's Liberation Army troops on the Barahotio pasture ground and asked them to move back. Incidentally, the Chinese had intruded into this area past year too in July and carried out an aerial sortie by helicopter. In this area the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawans are not allowed to use weapons as it is a demilitarized section.

Transgressions occur due to differing perceptions of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by the two sides. China's state-run Xinhua news agency also reported that Yang met separately with Doval and his other counterparts from South Africa and Brazil.

Barahoti, an 80 sq km sloping pasture about 140 km from the Uttarakhand capital Dehradun, is one of three border posts in what is known the "middle sector", comprising Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. China has set withdrawal of troops by India as the precondition for any meaningful dialogue on the issue.

Reports said that Chinese troops stayed inside the Indian territory for over 2 hours before going back.

In the 1962 War, the PLA did not enter the middle sector and the fighting took place in the western and eastern sectors.

The Barahoti incident comes as troops of both sides are locked in a stand-off in Doklam in the Sikkim sector since mid-June, with no sign of let up. ITBP men dressed in civil dress accompany revenue officials who go to this area for official purposes.
