Protecting vision during this year's solar eclipse August 21

The long-awaited Great American Eclipse takes place on Monday, Aug. 21.This is the first total solar eclipse visible from the continental United States since 1979. The astronomical feat happens when the sun, moon and Earth align completely.

"If somebody looks at the sun through such materials, they could incur a retinal injury and by the time they realize it the next day, it will be too late and nothing can be done", Dr. B. Ralph Chou, a retired professor of ophthalmology at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and a leading expert on eclipse safety, told NBC News MACH in an email.

The last time a total eclipse crossed the country from sea to sea was June 8, 1918.

What is a solar eclipse and how could it harm you? While it's a sight to behold, you need to do so safely. While it will be impressive, it won't be quite as life-changing as experiencing the event along the path of totality which sits to our north.

The district has ordered enough special eclipse viewing glasses for every student and teacher. How could observers on earth be linked to total solar eclipses?

The project, called Eclipse America, also has an entire website dedicated to learning about the event. It's expected that here, the sun will be eclipsed by approximately 80 percent.

Google has already partnered with others, like the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and NASA, to bring two million pairs of eclipse glasses to around 4,800 local libraries in the country.

US tests defense system after North Korea missile launch
USA forces sent two B-1 bombers from Andersen Air Force Base in Guam on a 10-hour round trip Saturday over the Korean Peninsula. Parts of the THAAD defense system were brought into South Korea under the government of ousted President Park Geun-Hye.

The library's Eclipse Party will take place on August 21 and will last from noon to 1:30 p.m.

In Nashville, Tennessee, the eclipse starts at 11:58 a.m. CDT and totality begins at 1:27 p.m. CDT, lasting for a little under 2 minutes. Wherever you choose to go, former NASA astronaut and senior manager Steven Hawley advises booking any travel tickets and hotel reservations way in advance and to expect plenty of traffic on the road.

Google has teamed up with the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation, SSI, the National Science Foundation, and NASA to distribute 2 million solar-viewing glasses to almost 5,000 libraries throughout the country.

Not be used if they are older than three years, or have scratched or wrinkled lenses.

A solar eclipse is a slow process.

NASA states that the American Astronomical Society has verified five manufacturers of eclipse glasses and solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 worldwide standard for such products: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium (AstroSolar Silver/Gold film only), Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.

Whether you're handy or not, don't even think about watching the eclipse through conventional sunglasses (even ones with very dark lenses).
