Supermarkets take egg products off shelves

Belgian media reported on Tuesday that the country's Agriculture Minister Denis Ducarme accused Dutch authorities of failing to warn European Union countries about egg contamination after it had been allegedly revealed by the country back in November 2016.

The FSA has stressed that the likelihood of becoming ill from eating contaminated eggs is very low.

They have reportedly pinned the source of the issue to a supplier of cleaning products in the Netherlands.

The statement added: "The decision to withdraw these products is not due to food safety concerns, but is based on the fact that fipronil is not authorised for use in food producing animals". It did not name the company directly, however.

The raids in the Netherlands were carried out as part of a joint action with Belgian authorities.

In the Netherlands, investigators seized the suspects' bank assets and real estate "because crime can not be rewarded", they said.

On Thursday, investigators arrested two people in raids on companies in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The FSA said the 700,000 figure represented 0.007% of eggs eaten in the United Kingdom each year.

Luxembourg said eggs sold in branches of the discount supermarket Aldi had been withdrawn, with one batch containing so much fipronil it was unsafe to be eaten by young children.

It is believed the toxic substance was introduced to poultry farms by a Dutch business named Chickfriend, and was initially brought in to treat red lice, a nasty parasite in chickens.

Though no illnesses have been reported, prosecutors said there is evidence that public health has been threatened by "the delivery or application of the biocide Fipronil in poultry houses in the egg sector".

The Agency put out its statement following an investigation into the problem, establishing that many more eggs than it previously believed had come into the United Kingdom from the affected farms.

The suspects were arrested on suspicion of endangering public health, according to the Dutch authorities.

The Danish food administration have asked people to keep calm as they claim that eating the eggs bought by Danæg Products poses no risk in human consumption.

It is why the Food Standards Agency says it is "very unlikely" there is any health risk.

All eggs in Belgium were blocked from sale.

Processed foods containing eggs, including sandwiches and salads, were recalled by leading supermarkets, including Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda.
