Jacksonville named candidate city for 2026 World Cup

Canada, U.S.A., and Mexico are working together to secure the tournament and have submitted a long list of 44 potential host cities.

The United Bid Committee of the United States, Mexico and Canada began its outreach for cities to declare interest to serve as a host city by sending Requests for Information to 44 cities throughout the continent.

Morocco is also intending to bid for the 2026 World Cup. Cities have until September 5 to declare their interest in taking part in the bid process.

The bid committee says it plans to include between 20 and 25 venues in its final bid, and it anticipates Federation Internationale de Football Association will allow at least 12 locations to become Official Host Cities. Other venues include the new Los Angeles Stadium, and the 105,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. But Olympic Stadium and possibly BC Place and Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium could potentially meet the requirements for the quarter-final and semi-final matches.

Kansas City named a potential host city for 2026 World Cup

Last month, Nissan Stadium hosted two, the U.S. Men's National Team opener in the Gold Cup and an International Champions Cup match between English Premier League clubs Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Canada Soccer, cities have been asked to provide an overview of transportation infrastructure, past experience hosting major sporting events, available accommodations, venues and other relevant information. At least 12 locations could ultimately host games.

That recipe hasn't always spared New Orleans painful snubs lately, with the city losing out on the rights to host future Super Bowls in 2014 and 2016 at the Superdome.

The 2026 tournament will be the largest in history, growing from the 1998-2022 standard by 50 percent in participants (32 to 48) and 25 percent in matches (64 to 80).
