Russian envoy to Sudan Mirgayas Shirinsky found dead at his residence

Russian Ambassador to Sudan Migayas Shirinskiy died Wednesday in the capital Khartoum, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Ambassador Shirinskiy died of natural causes, according to local police.

Russia's foreign ministry confirmed the news in a statement carried by state media.

The foreign ministry in Moscow told Russia's RIA state news agency: "We grieve to announce that on 23 August in Khartoum, the Russian ambassador to Sudan, Mr Shirinsky died". Initial reports ruled out any "foul play" in the death of the ambassador, the foreign ministries added.

Sergei Konyashin, the press secretary of the embassy in Sudan, told Rossiya'24 news channel the embassy staff had found Shirinsky with the manifestations of a heart attack.

"We mourn the death of Ambassador Mirgayas Shirinsky, who made friendly and honest efforts to develop privileged relations between the two countries and their people in various spheres", the government of Sudan said in a statement.

The ministry offered its condolences to the government and people of Russian Federation and praised Shirinsky's diplomatic efforts while in office.

"Doctors were called but they didn't manage to save him".

Shirinskiy, born in 1954, was appointed to the post in 2013.

Shirinsky had been in the Russian diplomatic service since 1977 and had previously served in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda.
