Dustin Johnson Takes Northern Trust Win in Old Westbury

Johnson stole victory from the clutches of world No.3 Jordan Spieth during a sudden-death play-off win in NY on Sunday, in the first leg of the $US67 million FedEx Cup play-offs series.

Johnson would eventually win the tournament with a short putt on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff, but it was how the two golf superstars got there in the first place that was so magical.

Rickie Fowler has made up a five-shot deficit to Dustin Johnson in six holes and joined him and Jhonattan Vegas in the lead midway through the second round of The Northern Trust. Tied with playing partner Jordan Spieth, Johnson took the safe line off the tee.

Johnson, who won the tournament in 2011, now holds the lead on the FedExCup standings at 4,466 while Spieth trails behind near at 3,871 points going into the Dell Technologies Championship on September 1-4.

"It was fun to be in the hunt again and know that my game is going to hold up under pressure", Johnson said.

"Jordan's a tough competitor", Johnson told CBS' Dottie Pepper in the immediate aftermath. "That last six-hole stretch, I played attractive golf". My battling qualities, that's all I really have right now. "It was nice in the play-off here, the wind sort of switched so I could cover the water". It was a little bit easier coming in with a 60-degree on 18.

Navy Chief Makes Rare Move After Another Collision
The announcement comes as the Navy continues to probe Monday's catastrophic collision between the USS John S. Seven sailors died in June when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other in waters off Japan.

"I feel the game's back in form like it was leading into he Masters", he said. "I had a clumsy start and didn't really hit it close enough and wasn't quite firing in the first seven holes. But to finally come out and do it, especially after the string of good finishes this summer, is really special".

"I feel about as good as I did before Augusta", said Johnson after his win at Glen Oaks Club on Long Island.

Johnson began the day three strokes behind third-round leader Spieth, and Johnson trailed by as many as five strokes on the front nine. Kuchar ran off four straight birdies and kept right on rolling, ending his round of 64 with eight birdies on the last 10 holes. Spieth played a superb back nine, with birdies on the 13th and 14th, a clutch par from 17 feet on the 17th and a great two-putt from 75 feet on the 18th. Earlier this season, he took home The Open Championship, leaving only the PGA Championship as the lone Major he has not claimed. "He won it. I thought that was a fun show".

"That was the first time that I really had to work hard for my win", he said.

"I feel great about my game". Just get the putting more consistent. Johnson played a bogey-free round, and the key to his round was a challenging downhill par putt on the 18th hole that allowed him to maintain his position.
