Humane Society of Tulsa asking for donations for pets removed from Houston

Rescue groups in California and throughout the country are mobilizing to help pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey and subsequent flooding in Texas and Louisiana. Rescue Village's partner shelters are working to prepare animals for transport and are unsure how long it will take them to arrive. This is too much for any region, and especially for a flood-prone region like southeast Texas, and for Houston, the nation's fourth largest city.

Because many people stayed behind-and died-during Katrina, fearful that they wouldn't be able to bring their animals to shelters, this time around, authorities are welcoming the pets with open arms.

Navy Chief Makes Rare Move After Another Collision

The Pet Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act requires the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure state and local emergency preparedness and evacuation plans include provisions for the care and shelter of pets.

Human society officials say they are sending a team, and medical supplies, to help animals in areas affected by the hurricane. Many Good Samaritans are reminding people that they especially on the lookout for animals as they go house to house in small boats, looking for individuals in crisis. Almost 200 dogs and cats were taken in by San Antonio's Animal Care Services, including 30 dogs from a flooded shelter in Pleasanton. This is the first of several expected flights to Seattle to help shelters that are directly housing displaced pets outside of Houston.

"Anything they need, we're here to help", she said. We have a formal agreement, or MOU with the SPCA of Texas, and should they have a need to have animals moved out of the state, we will assist with that.
