Mumbai rains highlights: Heavy rains left India's financial capital crippled

Residents in the city walked home, hitched rides on trucks or spent the night in their offices as the deluge evoked memories of the flooding in 2005 caused by a cloudburst that dumped almost a metre of rain in a single day, killing 570 people, grounding flights and cutting off rail and road links.

The Western Naval Command had made arrangements to provide shelter to Mumbaikars who were left stranded after heavy rains lashed the metropolis yesterday.

Heavy rains in Mumbai have brought a halt to the city and the authorities are the ones who are suffering and struggling the most due to the bad weather, evacuating people who were struck on roads.

"I could not find any mode of transport and spent my night on the streets instead of trying to reach home", 62-year-old Gangadin Gupta told AFP.

The city had almost a month's equivalent of rainfall in a single day.

However, the Deputy Director General (DDG) India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the rain has reduced in the past 8 to 10 hours and the situation is likely to be the same for a few hours more. "The drains are capable of handling only 50mm of rainfall, but in many areas rainfall was beyond this capacity", said Mehta.

Qatar's is officially returning its ambassador to Iran
Mediation attempts led by countries such as Kuwait and the U.S. have so far failed to make headway toward settling the crisis. Earlier, the ministry announced on its website that its ambassador to Tehran "will return to resume his diplomatic duties".

"All of us took refuge on the first floor of different buildings and the water only started receding this morning".

Mumbai: Two toddlers were among 14 people killed in Mumbai after floods caused by heavy monsoon rains destroyed homes and disrupted traffic in India's financial capital, police said, but lighter-than-feared rain on Wednesday helped relief efforts.

Navy helicopters have been kept on standby, with flood rescue teams and divers also ready for deployment.

"I had to stay the night at my office because train services were cancelled".

Catastrophic flooding in 2005 killed more than 500 people in Mumbai, and majority had been living in shantytown slums.
