Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has resigned

David Clarke is no longer Milwaukee County's sheriff.

Clarke has been a frequent guest at conservative events around the country and on cable TV, which critics have argued has taken his attention away from his duties as sheriff.

An inquest jury in May recommended charges against seven Milwaukee County Jail officials in the dehydration death of Terrill Thomas, who was denied water and a mattress for seven days while in Clarke's jail, the Milkwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Christenson says the letter doesn't give the reason for Clarke's resignation.

Clarke, a tough-on-crime conservative Democrat on paper, had become a favorite among conservatives with his provocative social media posts and his blind devotion to Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign. Previously, he suggested that he was being considered for a post at Trump's Department of Homeland Security - but that ended up unconfirmed. He later withdrew his name. He recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire".

A message seeking comment from the Sheriff's office was not returned. He also spoke at the Republican National Convention last summer.

Seven workers at the county jail he oversees are at the center of a criminal investigation into the dehydration death previous year of an inmate who prosecutors say was deprived of water as punishment. He has been vocal about gun rights and critical of what he called the "hateful ideology" of the Black Lives Matters movement, saying at times, "Stop trying to fix the police".
