Trump 'Understood' Firing Comey Would Not End Russia Investigation

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators is in possession of a letter that President Donald Trump wrote, but did not send, that laid out a rationale for firing FBI Director James Comey. According to numerous sources who spoke to the New York Times, the letter was never officially used, as White House counsel Donald McGahn believed that the language within it was "problematic".

Instead, a letter written by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that was focused on criticizing Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server was cited behind Trump's decision to fire the FBI chief. That changed, however, just days after Comey's firing.

Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary at the time, told reporters at first that the Department of Justice - specifically Rosenstein - had determined Comey needed to go because of how he handled that probe.

In his statement initially, Trump said he fired Comey while experiencing frustration at the FBI investigation of his campaign's alleged Russian Federation ties and at Comey's refusal to publicly exculpate Trump. The draft letter is allegedly evidence in the investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice by dismissing Comey. Trump then said he had acted on the Justice Department's recommendation.

Report: Mueller Has a Letter Trump Wrote Explaining Why He Wanted to Fire Comey

Hours later, Trump told NBC: "I was going to fire Comey - my decision".

After Trump fired Comey for his handling of the Russian Federation investigation, a fact he acknowledged in several television interviews -special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. "Wow, looks like James Comey exonerated Hillary Clinton long before the investigation was over...and so much more", he wrote. "But this White House is committed to being open and transparent with the special counsel's investigation". He also said the "FBI's reputation and credibility have suffered substantial damage" under Comey.

McGahn had reportedly managed to successfully block the president from sending the letter to Comey.

"Mr. Comey's conduct during the hearing added to concerns of Mr. Sessions and Mr. Rosenstein that the F.B.I. director had botched the Clinton investigation and had overstepped the boundaries of his job".

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see where this new allegation takes Comey, Clinton and Trump as many observers are taking sides as the above tweet stream shows.
