Burning Man - Literally! Guy Runs Into Flames At Fest

A Burning Man festival-goer airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center has died, according to a Nevada sheriff.

It was not clear why the man had jumped into the conflagration.

The Burning Man festival has been held in Black Rock for the past 26 years, which showcases a quasi-ritualistic celebration of art, individuality and togetherness.

Mitchell was a US citizen from Oklahoma but was now living in Switzerland.

The man burst through a human chain of safety personnel at around 10:30 p.m.as the 40-foot-tall effigy was burning, and he had to be rescued by Black Rock City firefighters.

There have been injuries reported before but Allen said this was the first fatality he was aware of in his 15 years with the county.

Following the death, authorities established that the 30-year-old had meant to take his own life and had told other festival-goers of his plans.

Wallmann said that means record temperatures could be set over the weekend at Burning Man, too.
