Here Are The Reasons Why Five Union Ministers Resigned

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to give a big shake-up to his Cabinet on Saturday. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been holding additional charge of the Defence Ministry since then.

Additionally, Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigned from the Modi government on Thursday evening in what is seen to be a signal for a mega cabinet reshuffle, which is likely take place over the weekend, as reported by the Indian Express, before PM Modi leaves for China on Sunday afternoon for the BRICS summit.

Currently, two key ministries are without a full-time minister.

Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey was on Thursday appointed Uttar Pradesh BJP president. Similarly, Sanjeev Balyan, who was Water Resources Minister, said that upon being asked, he "immediately sent a one-sentence resignation". However, confirmation was awaited.

According to the sources, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah earlier in the day met Rudy and asked him to resign.

In the first meeting, also attended by another top BJP leader, a detailed presentation on outreach plans for the states headed for elections in the coming years was delivered.

"Decision of the party is the best decision", he said. The portfolios he handled, Information & Broadcasting and Housing and Urban Development, were respectively given to Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Narendra Singh Tomar. She is also heading the Textile Ministry, which she was awarded after the Cabinet rejig in 2016.

Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, who has been in the eye of the storm after a spate of train derailments, is likely to take over as environment minister and Nitin Gadkari, who is already in-charge of road transport and shipping, is likely to be the new Railway Minister.

In the last elections in 2012 when Modi was the State's Chief Minister, the BJP had won 116 seats. Reports suggest they will be given "organisational work" in the BJP.

Against this backdrop, sources said, fresh faces in the Union Council of Ministers were expected from poll-bound Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka along with some from Rajasthan, and Maharashtra among others.

The last cabinet reshuffle took place in July a year ago in which Modi inducted 19 new faces and elevated Minister of State for Environment Prakash Javadekar to cabinet rank.
