Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) Plans Second US Headquarters

Inc said today it was searching for a location to build its second headquarters in North America that would cost more than $5 billion and house up to 50,000 staff.

It plans to stay in its sprawling Seattle headquarters and the new space will be "a full equal" of its current home, said founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

The rapidly growing company is soliciting bids for the project, dubbed Amazon's "HQ2," and said it would prioritize metropolitan areas with more than one million people that are within 45 minutes of an worldwide airport and near a strong university system.

Amazon opened a request for proposal, asking cities around the usa to tell the company why it should set up its new base in their areas.

By the e-commerce giant's account, its investments in Seattle from 2010 to 2016 have boosted the city's economy by roughly $38 billion - a high incentive for any major city looking to court innovative businesses. Not to mention the tens of billions of indirect investment to come from so many new jobs and a massive real estate development.

Cities are already eager to be the new home for Amazon's second headquarters.

Amazon said it would prefer to open the headquarters in a suburban or urban area with more than 1 million people.

The Whole Foods headquarters in Austin is far smaller than what Amazon said it's looking for - the flagship hub is also a full-service grocery store with shoppers who compete for parking spaces.

Amazon said it was seeking proposals by October 19 and would select the location next year.

Thursday morning, St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger tweeted that a regional team is being assembled to bring the new Amazon headquarters to the St. Louis Region.

At Amazon's Seattle campus, where it's building these "Spheres" as a nature complex and workspace. Employees on key teams will be able to choose whether they want to be based in Seattle or at the new site.

Amazon posted the HQ2 request-for-proposal early Thursday, triggering headlines around the country. "If Amazon puts a facility in another location that doesn't have that same kind of demand on high-tech employees, you're going to see potentially a two- to three-year advantage that Amazon can enjoy as they start to ramp up".
