Israeli Jets Strike Syrian Chemical Weapons Plant

Israeli planes have previously carried out strikes believed to have targeted the transfer of weapons to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which fought a devastating war with the Jewish state in 2006.

"Syria's army warns of the serious repercussions of such acts of aggression on the security and stability of the region".

A pan-Arab TV station is reporting that Israel has attacked a facility near the Syrian capital.

The airstrike targeted a facility near the town of Masyaf that some said was tied to Syria's chemical weapons program, in a stronghold of President Bashar Assad that is also heavily protected by the Russians.

Tensions between Israel and Syria increased after reports that Israel hit a research center responsible for developing chemical weapons near the city of Hama.

In early February, an Israeli helicopter reportedly fired at Syrian government forces' positions in the province of Quneitra in southern Syria, after a shell landed in the Golan Heights.

The SSRC oversees advanced missile production and remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons, including sarin gas. He said those killed and wounded were Syrians, adding that it was not immediately clear if there were casualties among Iranian and Hezbollah operatives. According to Al Jazeera, local media in Lebanon reported sightings of Israeli jets breaching Lebanese air space at the time of the attack.

Among the sanctions risked by PSG if they are found to have broken those rules is a ban from the Champions League. Its board will meet regularly over the coming months to evaluate all documentation relating to the case.

Last month, Mr Netanyahu said Iran was building facilities in Syria and Lebanon to produce precision-guided missiles "as part of its declared goal to eradicate Israel".

Former military intelligence head Amos Yadlin said the site "produces the chemical weapons and barrel bombs that have killed thousands of Syrian civilians".

Israel has refused to comment on the strikes but the Syrian army general command has confirmed the attack. According to him, the strike on the al-Talai Scientific Studies and Research Center may have been a effect of Nasrallah's visit to Damascus last week.

Official Israeli sources refused to comment on the reports, noting they do not comment on foreign reports.

"Serious security threats to Israel are presented by armed organisations, a lot of them financed and aided by Iran", he said in a public address.

Amidror added that the attack that Israel carried out was consistent with Israel's defensive posture regarding Syria and that the overnight attack marked "another level" of response.
