Power outages beginning for some in southwest Florida

Rob Gould, vice president and chief communications officer of Florida Power & Light talks about trying to restore power in between feeder bands.

"It's hard to speculate, but some of the estimates could be 5 million people without power based on this, you know, south-to-north trajectory, and it's not just Florida; it's going to be moving into Georgia as well. over the next five days", Long said. In Broward, more than a third of FPL's customers - 360,750 out of 933,300 - were without power.

The company said it has assembled the largest pre-storm workforce in US history, with more than 16,000 people ready to respond.

Irma's winds have rivaled the strongest for any hurricane in history in the Atlantic, whereas Harvey's damage came from record rainfall.

Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort swept up in Hurricane Irma evacuation
Others familiar with the storm's effects at Mar-a-Lago, including Trump employees, remember it differently. All three of Trump's golf clubs have been closed , according to NBC's Hallie Jackson.

A viral Facebook post indicated that Florida Power & Light would be shutting down power before Hurricane Irma arrives, but that's not the case, the company said.

"We think this could be the most challenging restoration in the history of the USA", he said.

FPL on Saturday lowered the number homes and businesses it expects to lose power to 3.1 million customer accounts, or 6 million people in its service area, which is half the state.

For many, it will now be a waiting game because FPL crews can't work to restore power once winds reach 35 miles per hour or higher. On Sunday, Gould said its nuclear plants were safe. "This is a very powerful storm and every bit of Florida is going to feel its wrath".
