Ryan school owner plays victim card: Time to make him answerable?

On Sunday, the Haryana government ordered a criminal case against Ryan International School's management and owner under the Juvenile Justice Act.

In two years, two children from Ryan International School have died.

The apex court's decision comes in the wake of the mysterious murder of Pradyuman Thakur, a class 2 student at Gurgaon's Ryan International School, who was found dead - with his throat slit - in the washroom of the school on September 8.

The vile murder has landed a school bus conductor in jail, who seemingly has confessed to his crime-police custody confessions are not admissible in court. However, the parents of the deceased child claim that the school is making bus conductor a scapegoat and the real culprit is on the run. "Despite taking all necessary steps for security and well-being of the students as required by law and prudence, if such an unfortunate incident occurs, the institution can not be held culpable as it is itself a victim of unfortunate circumstances", they said.

Police said they also questioned the school staff as a separate probe team team left for Mumbai to interrogate school CEO Ryan Pinto and director Augustine Pinto.

The police also exhumed confidence to satisfy everyone after concluding the investigation.

The minister said the murder and the recent rape of a five-year-old girl, allegedly by a peon in her school premises, were "heinous crimes".

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and the CBI on a plea filed by Pradhuman's father.

The protests turned violent, with a liquor shop, situated just 50 metres from the school, being set ablaze.

Around 100 parents had gathered outside the school demanding all children below six be accompanied by a maid while visiting the washroom. While Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar called it an "unfortunate incident", Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar told media persons: "If the allegations against the school are proved, then the affiliation will be revoked". The victim's father expressed doubts about the way the investigation is being carried out and demanded a CBI probe.

In a statement here, the journalists body said it strongly condemned "the brutal assault and lathicharge on mediapersons by the Gurugram police while they were on duty covering the protest by enraged parents". Let alone other schools, Ryan International itself has many previous cases of negligence and security lapses.
