Weekend In Review: IT Shatters Records With $117M Opening

The second weekend of September looks a lot better than the first, at least in terms of the box office, and it's basically all due to IT.

Release day in the United States for Stephen King's IT made for all-new record hitting highs as the film managed to net an estimate of $49.6 million, having had production costs of 35 million.

In fact, It enjoyed the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film, and only came second to Deadpool's $132.4 million opening when it came to R-rated films.

Hollywood's forgettable summer is over, and the first big fall release opened with a "massive and record breaking" box office total for "It". That's even with less theaters showing the movie thanks to Hurricane Irma in Florida forcing the closure of 175 theaters this weekend.

The movie was directed by Andy Muschietti, known for the 2013 horror film Mama.

Without true competition, with the novelty Home Again with Reese Witherspoon in the face, or Hitman & Bodyguard, which continued its small way, It has, unsurprisingly, taken over the weekend.

As of this writing, IT's projected to rake in $117M at the domestic box office (some estimates have it as high as $124M), a staggering amount of money which represents. well, a number of broken records.

The prior year, Warner assigned oversight of "It" to its New Line Cinema unit.

As children begin to disappear in the town of Derry in ME, a young group of children that are often seen as the outcasts of society are faced with tackling their biggest fears, squaring off against the evil entity that is Pennywise the clown. And "Wind River" caps the top five with an anticipated $3.2 million from 2,890 theaters. I'm not the biggest horror fan, but still made a decision to see It because the trailers intrigued me and plenty of anticipation surrounded this mainstream horror movie.

"It" made a killing at the box office.

"I don't think anyone could have imagined an opening over $100 million for this movie", comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

A sequel is already in the works at New Line with Gary Dauberman attached to write the script, and Muschietti expected to return to the director's chair.

"It starts with a brilliant story from Stephen King", Goldstein said of the movie.
