Hurricane Maria to deliver glancing blow to North Carolina this week

Visitors have been evacuated from Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

The order goes into effect at 5 a.m. Monday, according to Hyde County officials. It is a weak hurricane and is expected to weaken into a tropical storm by Wednesday.

Maria is barely a hurricane as of Tuesday morning with 75 miles per hour winds, according to the National Hurricane Center. A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of North Carolina including Albemarle, Pamlico Sounds, and the coastline from Cape Lookout to Duck. Most of the time, that northerly breeze would bring cooler air into our region, but this September's topsy-turvy weather pattern has parked hot high pressure north of us, so the air circulating southward isn't cool at all.

Mandatory evacuations were ordered as Hurricane Maria gets near North Carolina, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in an update on Monday, Sept. 25.

On the forecast track, the core of Maria will be moving well east of the United States southeast coast during the next two days. Forecasters said waves from the storm are affecting beaches from Florida through southern New England.

Fifa to lift the ban on poppies on football shirts
Mrs May said there was a "clear message" from the House of Commons that "we want our players to be able to wear those poppies". The ensuing row drew criticism from the Prime Minister, with Theresa May calling Fifa's stance " utterly outrageous ".

The unsafe core of the storm is expected to move well east of the southeast coast of the United States during the next day or so.

The storm, which struck the island as a Category 4 major hurricane, threatens to at least graze the U.S. East Coast later this week.

A record three Category 4 hurricanes have hit the USA since Harvey came ashore in Texas on August 25, causing an estimated $170 billion damage, according to Enki Research in Savannah, Georgia. It also hammered the Dominican Republic, the US Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos, a British overseas territory. Before leaving, however, Maria is forecast to leave some impact.

THE Atlantic hurricane season is so bad weathermen could run out of storm names - with this year threatening to be the second-worst tropical storm season since records began 166 years ago.
